On March 18, 1965, the whole world was spellbound in the direction of the Soviet Union. Because on this day the first spacewalk took place and was one of the most important events in the space race. The cosmonaut Alexei Archipovich Leonov left the protective lock of the Voschod 2 spaceship for 12 minutes and was the first person in space. When the capsule returned home, however, there were problems with the automatic landing systems. The commander of Voskhod 2, Pavel Ivanovich Belyayev, had to steer the capsule manually towards Earth, which was very dangerous. Although the capsule missed its intended landing site and landed in the difficult terrain of the Ural Mountains, the two cosmonauts were safe and the mission was a complete success.

Leonov wore a Sturmanskie watch throughout the mission and during the spacewalk. The Open Space series is dedicated to this event and the two cosmonauts.
